MY WHY

In the fifth grade, I started bringing disposable cameras to school. I have hundreds of developed photos of my friends on the soccer field, the lilac tress on our school grounds, first ever selfies, and a lot of peace signs.

I've always been a bit of an observer. I have felt my whole life like my place in the world was in my gift of observing magic in people and places around me. I knew early on that for me, my life's purpose was to see beautiful things, and to fully allow myself and others to experience them.

I was probably in high school when I knew this purpose. I can actually remember the moment, asking myself "what's my purpose?" while sitting in the backseat of my parents Subaru, dreaming out the window. And I know that that may feel like too big of a question for someone so young, but I think it's something I have always known, even before I had the words for it.

And from then on, I believe that every important decision I have made has been unconsciously or consciously based on that purpose. And it's definitely the reason why from fifth grade on, my camera was never far away.

When I got my first digital camera at fifteen, my life changed forever. As I look back on those early digital camera years, I see that I had a natural eye for texture, for color, and for light in my photos. I would walk around my house alone taking pictures of spoons, cats, window ledges, and floor boards. And I would sneak photos of my beautiful mamma any chance I could get.

All this to say, I continue to take photos because I've always needed to take photos. And because I want to remember and connect with my fifth grade observer of beauty self as much as I can in this life. And just so you know, I would be so incredibly honored if you were on the other side of the lens.
